Robot welding installation for shipbuilding yards - uses transverse on side rails to carry welding torch, and programmable controller for fast accurate placement

The robot installation is particularly adapted to automated electric welding with the welding torch carried on a transverse boom running on rails along either side of the work space. The high current welder is coupled to its supplies and controls by heavy current cables and a bundled cable comprising optical fibres or electronic wires. Opto-electronic convertors are installed at either end of optical fibre links to provide conversion between optical and electronic signals. The automated unit is controlled by a programmable controller using data which is suitably encoded and decoded to give position data or set a position.
