The invention concerns a procedure to ensure a high retro-reflective capacity and long lifetime for horizontally placed road marking strips. The procedure can also be used to make marking strips already laid visible in inclement weather. This is achieved by laying down small retro-reflective plates of nodulized pearls with at least two rows of pearls at a predetermined interval on the road marking strips. The small plates are produced through slicing off of bands of pressed retro-reflective material, and the bands are thinner than the width of the road marking strips. The apparatus for placing the small plates (18) on the strips (8) with a mutual distance (D) consists of an assembly including a vehicle with a flat roller (22) for strips (12) of retro-reflective material, which via a perforated roller (10) with an internal vacuum and a cutting roller (16) for slicing off the small plate lengths, as well as an air jet (20), places the small plates at equal distance apart on the road (S).
