PURPOSE:To improve the energy density and the flatness of the output voltage of a battery by using a nickel-chloride graphite intralayer compound prepared by using graphite fiber obtained by thermally treating specified carbon fiber. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fiber having a configuration in which hexagonal meshy planes of carbon are arranged in annual ring form substantially parallel to the axis of the fiber, is thermally treated to obtain graphite fiber which is used to make a nickel-chloride graphite intralayer compound represented by the general formula CxNiCl2+y (4<x<12, 0<=y<1). The above nickel-chloride graphite intralayer compound can be obtained, for example, by bringing graphite fiber prepared by a gas-phase growing method into contact with nickel chloride powder in an atmosphere of chlorine. When such an active material is used for a positive electrode, a battery having excellent characteristics such as a high utilization rate of the active material during electric discharge and a good flatness of discharge voltage can be provided. |
