PURPOSE:To inhibit a liq. crystal cell from warping and waving, to increase the reliability, and to make the thickness small by using a material having a lower coefft. of thermal expansion and higher rigidity than the material of the 2nd substrate as the material of the 1st substrate. CONSTITUTION:The 1st substrate 5a is made of a material having a lower coefft. of thermal expansion and higher rigidity than the material of the 2nd substrate 5b. An edge of the substrate 5b not connecting with the substrate 5a is notched 7a, 7b-. The material of the substrate 5a is glass, and a plastic sheet such as a sheet of polysulfone, polyether sulfone or polyester is used as the substrate 5b. Since the substrate 5a is made of glass, warping and waving are not caused and the substrate 5b has a high coefft. of thermal expansion, so when both the substrates 5a, 5b are stuck together and heat treated, the substrate 5b is stretched to keep the thickness of a liq. crystal layer 4 uniform and to improve the quality. The concentration of stress is avoided by the notches 7a- to prevent warping and waving, so a thin cell of high reliability and an almost uniform thickness is obtd. |
