PURPOSE:To improve the strength of a connection part by using a gas flame as a heat source and interposing a heat resisting thermal diffusing plate between the gas flame and a fiber and make the control of the gas flame easy to evaporate a surface layer including minute flaws of the surface of the fiber with an easy operation. CONSTITUTION:In this method, flaws generated in surface layer parts of optical fibers 5 and 5' in a welding connection part are processed by fire polishing in case of welding connection between optical fibers. First, the welding connection part of fibers 5 and 5' is arranged in the horizontal direction above a gas burner 10 through a heat resisting thermal diffusing plate 11 and is heated by a gas flame 12 from the gas burner 10. The head of the gas flame 12 is transmitted to the diffusing plate 11 and is diffused, and local heating is not performed. Temperature distributions in fibers 5 and 5' are adjusted by changing the arrangement of the burner 10 and the diffusing plate 11 or the size of the gas flame 12, and thus, surface layer parts of fibers 5 and 5' are evaporated to eliminate flaws on surfaces. |
