Platen press for the production of wood material boards, especially of modified chipboards, having at least one upper press platen and at least one lower press platen, an upper structure plate assembly disposed under the upper press platen, a lower structure plate assembly resting on the lower press platen and means for fastening the structure plate assemblies to the press platens. At least the structure plate of the upper structure plate assembly is held by low pressure acting in a low pressure chamber formed by a soft seal running round in the region of the edge of this structure plate. The structure plate of the upper structure plate assembly is held on an elastically deformable upper support plate which forms the top cover of the low pressure chamber. The support plate is fastened to the upper press platen in such a manner that it can sag together with the structure plate assembly when the platen press is open. <IMAGE>
