The present invention relates to a combine harvester of axial design, in which the axial-threshing and separating unit is installed transversely to the direction of travel and projects beyond the two side walls of the cleaning device. Shafts extending towards the ploughland are connected to the two end regions of the axial-threshing and separating unit, there being provided, in the region of these shafts facing the ground, devices which move the straw falling down through the shafts towards one another. Provided underneath the axial-threshing and separating unit is a screen-box device which separates off the short-straw/chaff mixture and then discharges it onto the already deposited straw swath, so that the short-straw/chaff mixture is picked up, together with the straw swath, by a collecting press following the combine harvester and is no longer left lying on the field. Obstructions to the germination of the young seeds by concentrated accumulations of short-straw/chaff mixture are thereby avoided in a simple way.
