PURPOSE:To prevent erasure of index information due to an optical beam for recording or the like and to prevent damage by recording index information separately with recording information of a recording medium to attain read of the index information at the same time with the loading to an information recording and reproducing device. CONSTITUTION:A package type memory 14 is built in a part of a case 2 and an external connecting section 15 connected electrically to input/output pins of the information recording and reproducing device is provided to a side face of the case 2. The index information is recorded to the memory 14. After the loading of the disc 1, when the user inputs an information retrieval code to the information recording and reproducing device or an input/output device or the like, the index information corresponding to the information retrieval code is read from the memory 14 and an optical head 12 is moved in advance in radial direction of the disc 1 near the desired information track position based on the address information. In erasing or writing the index information, after a switch 28 is thrown to the position of an erasure/write circuit 30, the erasure or write operation is conducted. |
