Esp. from a carbide furnace, the flow rate of the hot off-gases is reduced by a flow cross-section expansion region in the gas piping and then water is sprayed into the gas, in amt. (kg/hr.) one to ten times that of the dust content (in kg/hr) of the gas, such that the temp. of the gas-stream mixt. remains above 110 deg.C.
