The invention relates to a method for checking credit cards, using a computer terminal which is connected to a microcomputer, also comprising a magnetic and/or optical reader and a printer for printing a sales slip, cash register slip or the like of the text impressed in the credit card. The invention is characterised by the fact that during the checking and during the manual or automatic printing, the credit card is passed through a running channel which is in an operating plane at the edges of which two mutually opposite longitudinally extending slots or grooves are provided and in the bottom of which the optical and/or magnetic read heads are arranged in such a manner that the card is read out during its movement in the card channel, the information picked up during the reading out being processed by the computer which activates the electromagnet which, in turn, moves the blocking device into a position in which they hold the card, the front pointing upward in a number of predetermined positions.
