In a process for removing and recovering tungsten or molybdenum and for removing graphite from the potassium hydroxide bath in the electrolytic cleaning of tungsten or molybdenum wire, the contaminated hydroxide solution from the bath which the wire passes through is first passed through a mechanical filter to remove the graphite. Alkaline earth metal hydroxide in solid form, in particular barium or calcium hydroxide, is then added to the graphite-free solution to precipitate the tungstate or molybdate, the precipitation products are then filtered off and the purified, undiluted potassium hydroxide solution is returned to the cleaning bath. <IMAGE>
