To be able to evaluate the shortest transit time differences in laser range finders which are operating in accordance with the pulse transit time method, the received pulse is used for triggering the transmitted pulse so that this feedback produces an oscillating system in which the transit time measurement can take place not via one but by several pulse round trips. Thus, time differences multiply by the number of oscillations used for the measurement, delays in the transmitting and evaluating electronics being included as constants and being determinable by measurements. The accuracy of the measurement is only influenced by fluctuations in the delay times in the circuit and not by their magnitude.
