The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the heat treatment of fine granular material, especially cement raw material, for pre-calcining the material with supply of partial secondary air from a cooler and waste gases of a high-temperature zone. Accordingly, the invention provides a method and an apparatus for universal utilization achieving a high calcining degree of the material, even in the case of using solid fuels and fuels of low caloric value, simple starting behaviour and long burning paths. According to the invention, the partial secondary air of the cooler, as tertiary air, is passed into the calcining zone in a turbulent flow through a conduit (4). Hot waste gases of the sintering zone (12) are passed into the calcining reactor (1) in a partial flow axially from below, and a second partial flow of the hot waste gases is introduced at the end of the calcining zone by conduit 5. The pre-heated material as well as the fuel which are to be supplied into the calcining zone are introduced into the turbulent flow formed therein. The invention may be used for single- flow as well as double-flow arrangement.
