A liquid phase oxidation reaction is carried out by with-drawing a stream aqueous reaction medium from a tank 2, heating it e.g. in heat exchanger 24 an then returning it to the tank 2. Once a chosen reaction temperature is attached oxygen is added to the stream in a venturi 18 and the heating is discontinued. The stream containing fine bubbles of oxygen is re-introduced into the tank through nozzles 30 so as to dissolve substantially all the oxygen. By avoiding evaporature losses caused by undissolved gas breaking the surface of the liquid phase, requirements for external heat can be minimised. Oxidation reactions involving the formation of salts from metals in acid media may be carried out by this method.
|
