<p>The turntable of a gear forming machine tool has to be very accurately controlled as regards its position and/or rate of rotation with respect to the gear cutting or forming tool. It has been proposed to use a mechanical gyroscope to measure the position but this arrangement is subject to errors inherent to such a mechanical gyroscope. Herein, there is proposed the use of a laser gyroscope to measure the turntable position. Also, disclosed are interpolation techniques for achieveing the measurement resolution required for such a purpose. As well as a gear forming machine tool, the invention can be applied to other situations where the position of a rotatable member has to be accurately measured, for example in Engineering metrology machines.</p> |
