PURPOSE:To improve shape and yield of carbonaceous fibers, by blending a hydrocarbon with a specific transition metallic compound and a sulfur compound in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:The mixed solution of a hydrocarbon, a transition metal compound and a sulfur compound is jetted from the nozzle 3 by the carrier gas 9 and thermally decomposed by the reaction column 7 provided with the heater 5 and the cooling nozzle 15. The transition metal compound containing a bond between a transition metal and oxygen and/or surfur and the hydrocarbon or the transition metal compound, the hydrocarbon and sulfur (compound) are heated in a mixed state wherein 1X10<-3>-1X10<2> atom exists based on 1 atom transition metal atom. Carbonaceous fibers having 0.01-15mum diameter, a ratio of length/diameter of 20-2,000 and improved strength, etc., are obtained in high yield without evolving sooty carbon.
