NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (X is Cl or Br). EXAMPLE:3-Cyano-2-propenyltrimethylammonium chloride. USE:A precursor for l-carnitine useful as a remedy for chronic myocardial ischemia or angina pectoris, etc. PREPARATION:According to the reaction formula, carnitinenitrile expressed by formula II is dehydrated with acetic anhydride as a dehydrating agent to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The reaction is carried out using dl-carnitinenitrile as the carnitinenitrile at 80-140 deg.C, preferably 100-120 deg.C for 20-50hr, preferably >=35hr. The amount of the acetic anhydride to be used is equimolar amount - about 3 mol based on the compound expressed by formula II.
