TREATMENT OF END FACE OF CAST BILLET

PURPOSE:To seal an exposed cavity in the end face of a cast billet and to prevent the oxidation of the end face by allowing to press contact a solid piece of thermite to the central part of the end face of cast billet and firing the solid piece by heating to melt the vicinity of the press-contacting part and solidifying it thereafter. CONSTITUTION:An oxidizing agent such as sodium chlorate and a combustion improver such as cryolite are added to a mixture of Al powder and a metallic oxide such as iron oxide, to set up it by an organic binder such as phenolic resin thereby forming a thermite solid piece. The solid piece is allowed to press- contact with an exposed cavity in the central part of the end face of cast billet to heat and fire it by the heat of the cast billet's own thereby solidifying the vicinity of press-contacting part of the solid piece after melting it. In this way, a treatment for preventing the oxidation of the end face of cast billet is performed rapidly and easily by a simple treating process.
