PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of phenylalanine, in high yield and purity, by reducing 5-(phenylmethylene)-2,4-imidazolidinedione with hydrogen in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of Raney-Ni catalyst. CONSTITUTION:5-( Phenylmethylene )-2,4-imidazolidinedione and N-( aminocarbonyl)-DL-phenylalanine are produced at the same time by reducing 5-(phenylmethylene)-2,4-imidazolidinedione (PLDN) with hydrogen in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of Raney-Ni catalyst. In the above reaction, the catalytic activity can be remarkably improved by the use of an alkaline aqueous solution (e.g. NaOH, KOH, etc.). The concentration of the alkaline component is 0.1-20wt%, preferably 1-10wt%, and the weight ratio of the alkali to PLDN is usually 3-30. |
