A procedure for processing hard, brittle materials with little tensile strength in proportion to compressive strength, e.g. rock, boulders or concrete. To achieve cracking of the material (1), one or more holes (2) are made in the material, and a cooling agent (3) consisting of a liquid-cooled gas etc. is introduced into these holes. This creates the rapidly cooled zone (4) in the hole (2) and the contraction in the zone causes the cracks.
