Sliding roof for motor vehicles having a opening in the roof. It comprises a frame 11; a guide rail 12 on each side of the roof opening 3; a movable panel 2; a raising and lowering device 24 located on the frame 11 adjacent to a rear edge of the roof opening 3; a front support 6 which supports a front part of the panel 2 and which slides along the guide rail 12; a transmission element connected to the front support 6 and to the raising and lowering device 24 for transmitting a drive force to the front support 6 and to the raising and lowering device; and a lost-motion mechanism 66 interposed between the transmission element and the front support to prevent the drive force from being transmitted from the transmission element to the front support 6 while the raising and lowering device 24 is being driven by the transmission element. <IMAGE>
