The invention relates to a novel apparatus of the descender type permitting both descent and ascent along a rope. This apparatus is characterised in that it comprises a groove 2 shaped so as to match the side of the said rope and sandwiched between a fixed plate 5 and a removable plate 6, two nuts 8, mounted on the fixed plate 5 so as to be able to pivot about two axes (shafts) 11, a balancing plate 13 arranged substantially parallel to the groove, articulated on the two nuts at two axes (shafts) 14, the said plate 13 including means 17 for fastening to the user's harness, means 18 for elastically returning the nuts 8 to the blocking position of the rope, and a lever 19 for manual control of the distancing of the nuts from their blocking position.
