Storage containers for spent nuclear fuels must sufficiently screen the radioactive radiation and resist external chemical and mechanical effects. A container base made of cast iron with nodular graphite of the quality class GGG 40 and a silicon content of 1.8-2.2% fulfils the set requirements when it is cast, falling into a mould with continuous seeding with 0.05-0.20 mould seeding medium, through a pipe filled with seeding granules and dipped into the cast pool, and when the mould essentially consists of an outer shell (3) with an upper cover core (6), a lower mounting core (1) and an inner core (4). <IMAGE>
