Process and equipment for reducing iron ore with C-containing fuel and oxygen, and for generating a CO2-free gas

The types of equipment described, which as a rule are shaft furnaces, are used for carrying out a process which permits a fine-grained and also a fine-lumpy ore to be reduced, while avoiding agglomeration, on an energy basis of 100% of C-containing fuel and oxygen, a relatively large quantity of a gas, which largely consists only of CO and a little hydrogen but can also contain major proportions of hydrogen and is largely free of CO2 and contains only small proportions of sulfur, being generated at the same time in a relatively large quantity, it being possible to use the sensible heat thereof, as the case may be, for preheating and smelting large quantities of scrap as compared with the reduced iron. The mixed melt thus obtained is a good raw material for continuous steel production.
