The invention relates to a vehicle interval control system for motor vehicles by means of which it is possible to drive along behind a preceding vehicle in a regulated fashion and within a certain range automatically to decelerate or accelerate the vehicle. The automatic deceleration or acceleration normally occurs by influencing the throttle valve of the engine and in critical driving situations by influencing the brake system, but in such a way that full braking is not initiated.
