A battery-powered electric screwdriver, in which the power supply for the drive motor is interrupted via a switch after reaching a torque which can be set, by means of mechanical decoupling of the screwdriver shaft. This is achieved by a coupling acting in a known manner on the switch, by axial displacement. This switch causes the power supply to be interrupted, via a logic circuit, so that it is not possible to switch the drive motor on again until the main switch has been opened and closed again. <IMAGE>
