The detonation system for the application of coatings to workpieces contains a jet tube (13) which forms a stream of the material of the coating (14). The jet tube (13) is connected to a sparking plug (7), a powder metering device (12) and a gas mixer (11), which are controlled by a control unit (1). A source (16) of a continuous stream of high-temperature gas is secured on the jet tube (13) such that its nozzle (17) is directed at the workpiece (15) in order to heat an individual portion (18) of the coating (14). Mechanically connected to the jet tube (13) is a photoelectric transmitter (21), which is arranged at a certain angle to the source (16) of the continuous stream of high-temperature gas such that its optical axis (22) intersects the longitudinal axis (20) of the source (16) in the plane of that individual portion (18) of the coating (14) of the workpiece (15) which is heated by the source (16). <IMAGE>
