An apparatus for maintaining a braking force applied to a vehicle includes an electromagnetic check valve (3) disposed in a brake actuating fluid circuit (1, 2), sensing means (30) for sensing operating conditions of the vehicle, and an electronic control unit (20) receiving, as inputs thereto, detection signals produced by the sensing means (30) for controlling operation of the electromagentic check valve (3).
