Prepn. comprises intimately mixing lithium carbonate and silica and thermally treating the mixt., the novelty is that the mixt. is thermally treated by pre-calcination at 410-440 deg.C to form in the mixt. at least 25 wt.% of a hexagonal phase composed of lithium, silicon and oxygen, the crystal parameters of the phase being a = 3.06 Angstroms and c = 4.97 Angstroms.
