A process for the preparation of phenol ethers from mono- or polyhydric-phenols and aliphatic alcohols with high selectivity is characterized by the use of catalysts containing or composed of superacids, at temperatures from 110 DEG to 170 DEG C, and at phenol: alcohol ratios of from 2:1 to 6:1. The superacid are compounds or catalyst systems composed of particular acids or mixture of Lewis acids with piotic acids having Ho values of less than -12 e.g. fluorinated sulphonic acids.
