This unit is of the type in which each modular element comprises ladders 1, on the rungs 6 of which shelves, trays and the like 7 are placed at the desired levels. On the one hand, each rung 6 of each ladder 4 is formed by two metal rods a short distance apart, and on the other, each shelf 7 has at each end designed to be rested on one rung 6 of one ladder 4, at least two hooks 8a, 9a one above the other and separated from each other by an interval equal to the interval between the rods forming one rung 6. Each hook can be engaged over one of the rods of this rung 6 in order both to secure the shelf 7 to the two ladders 4 on either side, and also to participate in supporting the shelf 7 in question on the corresponding rungs 6 of the two ladders 4. <IMAGE>
