PURPOSE:To obtain the titled amino acid without using complicate separation procedures, by reacting glycine with an aldehyde in the presence of a base and an iminodiacetate-type chelate resin containing a specific metallic element ion captured therein. CONSTITUTION:beta-Hydroxy-alpha-amino acid is produced by reacting glycine with an aldehyde (e.g. a lower aldehyde such as formaldehyde) in the presence of a base (e.g. NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3, etc.). The reaction is carried out in the copresence of an iminodiacetate-type chelate resin containing one or more ions of the elements selected from Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, In and Pb in a captured form. The amino acid producible by the reaction is serine, threonine, hydroxyleucine, etc. Since the resin can be handled in the same manner as a catalyst in a hetergeneous system, it can be economically separated from the reaction liquid after the reaction only by filtration, etc. |
