In an internal combustion engine which is provided on the one hand with a heating wire air-flow sensor and on the other with a retaining vessel, in which fuel vaporising from the tank is stored and introduced into the intake pipe during operation of the internal combustion engine, it may happen, in the event of a malfunction of the fuel retaining device, that too rich a mixture is fed to the internal combustion engine and the internal combustion engine for this reason automatically stops. Once the internal combustion engine has stopped, the heating wire of the air-flow sensor is normally cleaned of any impurities by burning off. Burning off is automatically triggered by switching off of the ignition. If the internal combustion engine has stopped due to a malfunction of the fuel retaining device and the ignition is then switched off, there is a risk that the fuel-air mixture introduced into the intake pipe from the retaining vessel will be ignited by burning off of the heating wire, leading to an explosion. In a method according to the invention for controlling the heating wire air-flow sensor, in addition to the position of the ignition switch, the state of movement of the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine is also sensed and burning off of the heating wire is prevented if the internal combustion engine has already come to a standstill before the ignition is switched off. In this way the risk of explosion is overcome.
