Process for producing pitch containing a meso-phase

A process for producing pitch containing a meso-phase from petroleum pitch or coal tar pitch is described. In this process, interfering distillate fractions, which impair the formation of the meso-phase and are originally present in the pitch raw material or have been formed as a by-product during the heat treatment, are stripped off at a temperature from 360 to 450 DEG C, using a carrier gas, in order to reduce the total heat treatment time and to promote the formation of the meso-phase by increasing the stirring effect.
