System for the transmission of a frequency modulated sound carrier (T1 - T4), espacially a video recorder, in which the low frequency sound signal (L, R) is conveyed, before and after the transmission or recording, by way of an amplitude compressor (1, 4) or amplitude expander (23, 25) which can be switched selectively into or out of out of operation, characterized in that the frequency of the sound carrier (T1 - T4) has different values upon transmission with and without amplitude compression and upon the reproduction a control magnitude (28) is derived from the frequency of the sound carrier for the purpose of switching in or out the amplitude expander (23, 25).
