PURPOSE:To produce xylene continuously, in high selectivity, yield and efficiency, keeping the high catalytic activity for a long period, by methylating toluene or benzene using a specific fluorinated aluminosilicate as the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Xylene is produced by reacting toluene or benzene with a methylating agent such as methanol at 200-650 deg.C and a space weight velocity of 0.1-20hr<-1> under normal pressure-10kg/cm<2>G in the presence of a catalyst comprising a fluorinated aluminosilicate prepared by fluorinating (A) a crystalline aluminosilicate having a molar silica/alumina ratio of >=12 and a control index of 1-12, e.g. ZSM-5, ZSM-11, etc. with (B) a fluorination agent such as flon gas, hydrogen fluoride, NaF, BF3, monofluoroacetic acid, etc. The fluorinated aluminosilicate may be mixed with a proper binder such as alumina, formed, and calcined at 550-1,000 deg.C. |
