The device (2) for taking up belt slack can be fitted on top of a seat belt retractor (1). It consists of a cylinder (3) which is open at the top and has a piston(4) operating inside. The piston is operated by gases produced by the ignition of the explosive charge of a cartridge fitted to the side of the cylinder underneath of the piston (4). Integral with part of the piston is a grommet (5) on the upper surface of which a cable (7) is looped. One end of the cable is fixed to the cylinder by lug (9), the other end is connected to a circumferential point of the seat belt spool. When the cartridge is ignited by an electric impulse from a decelration-sensing device, the produced gas moves the piston upwards, pulls the cable strand (13) connected to the spool, which rotates and takes up belt slack. |
