The invention relates to a process for the utilisation of cellulose-rich residues from built-up areas - in particular domestic refuse - from agriculture and forestry, and from commercial establishments by processing to give a briquetted fuel without the residues having to be dried. By spraying propionic acid onto the compressed mass or by mixing propionates into the compressed mass, a briquette of cellulose-rich residues can be produced which is storable for a prolonged period in spite of a moisture content of 20 - 30%. The quantity of added propionic acid or propionates depends on the desired or demanded storage period. It is in general between 0.05 and 5%, preferably 0.1 to 1%.
