Method and apparatus for producing a container of thermoplastic material

A container is produced from a tubular blank of polyethylene terephthalate or similar material, by firstly stretching the blank axially approximately 3-fold to produce a preform. The preform is heated to a temperature above the glass transition temperature and is then converted to the container in a blowmould (12) whilst its length is reduced. In order to achieve this, a base portion (11) of the blowmould is moved towards the orifice (22) of the final container as the preform is expanded.
