Two microcomputers (M1, M2) are coupled by using clock pulses (T) which are transmitted from the first microcomputer (M1) to the second microcomputer (M2), and by using data (D1, D2) which are transmitted serially between the two microcomputers (M1, M2) after synchronisation with the clock pulses (T). The second microcomputer (M2) monitors the occurrence of the clock pulses (T) and, when the clock pulses (T) are missing, automatically carries out a predetermined programme sequence. The clock pulses (T) and the data (D1, D2) are transmitted between the two microcomputers (M1, M2) by using optoelectronic coupling elements (K1 to K3). The circuit arrangement can be provided in telephone terminals in which the first microcomputer (M1) is supplied by the power system via a power unit and the second microcomputer (M2), which can be constructed as dialling processor, is fed via the telephone line. In this case, it is still possible to dial a remote subscriber if the first microcomputer (M1) fails. <IMAGE>
