A spirit-level mechanism with gas-bubble levels is described which can be detachably fastened to a portable power drill. In one embodiment, the spirit-level mechanism comprises a drive shaft which can be inserted between the power drill and the chuck for rotating together with them. The drive shaft is rotatably mounted in a holder, and this holder is held stationary relative to the power-drill housing. The holder comprises first and second surfaces which are orientated parallel to and respectively perpendicularly to the axis of rotation of the drive shaft. These two surfaces carry one spirit level each. Alternatively, the holder can have a first holding plate as well as a spirit-level plate which is linked thereto and carries one or more spirit levels. Furthermore, an orientation plate provided with grooves is provided which acts on the edges of the holding plate and the spirit-level plate and holds them in a predetermined angular relationship to one another. In a further embodiment, the spirit-level mechanism is detachably fastened to the end face of the power-drill housing. For this purpose, a circular or cylindrical projection extends away from the front face of the power-drill housing and into an opening of the spirit-level mechanism so that this opening surrounds the outer periphery of the projection.
