: A hair waving or straightening process is provided wherein hair is contacted with a composition for reducing the disulfide linkage of keratin, the hair is subsequently rinsed and is finally contacted with a composition which reestablishes the cleaved disulfide linkages. The improvement of this invention comprises including an anionic surfactant in the composition which contains the reducing agent and also contacting the hair with an aqueous solution of a special kind of cationic polymer separately from the step of contacting with the reducing agent.
