Disclosed is a chiral, total synthesis of thienamycin from D-glucose which proceeds via intermediates I, II, III and IV to known lactone V which is known to be useful via acid VI in the total synthesis of thienamycin (VII): <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen or a removable protecting group; R is a removable protecting group.
