Infrared optical fiber core is made up of one component of halogenides (i.e. TlBr, TlCl, AgBr, AgCl, CsI, CsBr) and a slight amount of additive, which contains the anion or cation of the halogenides. Because the additive inhibits the slipping of crystallites, the mechanical strength and elastic region of the core increase. This reduces roughing of the surface by plastic deformation. Additionally, because the growth of crystallites is restrained by the additive, the characteristics of transmission remain stable for a long time.
