The overvoltage arrester comprises a number of shielding elements with arrester elements fastened to the interior. The shielding elements along the inner circumference have a circular depression for electrically and mechanically connecting the arrester elements to the shielding elements. The shielding elements are connected to each other by insulating support members and conducting support members. The arrester elements can be arranged in a star or cross shaped structure at the centre of which conducting or insulating connecting members may be provided.
