The machine opens the tops of sacks, pref. those with side folds, and transfers them to a filling spout. Two suction strips movable apart open the sack, while pairs of grips engage with the sack below the mouth edge at the folds. Two distance-pieces (7,8) are inserted in the sack mouth near the inner side fold lines after initial opening by the suction strips (4,5), and travel in the inserted position with the sack from the opening to the filling position. They are swung clear again after the spout has been inserted.
