The fatigue strength of components consisting of titanium alloys, which at least partially belong to the so-called beta -alloy type, i.e. which can be transformed by solution-annealing above the beta -transformation temperature and subsequent quenching at least partially into the mechanically unstable beta -phase, can be increased by at least one third by transforming the surface of the workpiece, originally present in the state as delivered with ( alpha + beta ) microstructure, by brief heating by means of mechanical working, laser irradiation, flame heating or induction heating and subsequent immediate quenching into the beta -state and subsequently converting it into martensite ( alpha ''-phase) before and/or during operation by applying a mechanical stress.
