This lighting system is used to give different colours of background light inside an advertising display panel. The light source is a conventional horizontal white fluorescent tube (1). Surrounding the tube is a translucent diffusing cylinder (2). Horizontal strips of the cylinder are covered with differing coats of colouring material. The tube sits on four free-running bearing wheels (4,6), supported by the frame of the display panel. The cylinder can be rotated to bring the different horizontal stripes between the light source and front of the display panel. An electric motor (12) drives a shaft (11) on which is mounted a pulley (11). A continuous drive belt (10) runs around the pulley and the diffuser tube.
