The invention relates to a device with an oscillating rubbing ring for axially supporting a shaft. A non-rotating rubbing ring 6 undergoes small oscillations in terms of inclination so as to remain constantly pressed axially, by virtue of a spring 17, against a rubbing ring 1 secured to a rotary shaft 2. These inclinations are accompanied by no significant load by virtue of balls 31 rolling in grooves 30, 32 cut in a movable sleeve 28 and a fixed sleeve 33.
