PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive and compact printer provided with a picture reading section while keeping the printer same in size as that of a conventional printer by providing the picture reading means reading a lower area of a print head onto a carriage of the print head. CONSTITUTION:A reading member comprising an image sensor 12, a mirror 13, a lens 14 and an electric lamp 16 is fixed on a carriage stand 3 while being kept to a prescribed position by a frame 17. Then the image sensor 12 is constituted to read picture information of a reading area at the left side (downward in the print direction) of the print head 9 through the mirror 13 and the image forming lens 14. Further, a control section 1 controls easily the position of the carriage stand by taking the distance L from the center of the reading area 15 to a print element section 9a to an integer multiple of the print pitch in the direction of main scanning of the print head 9 at reading mode.
